Bifurcaciones, 2023
A 13’ composition/performance for 7 pianists on a single piano
Bifurcaciones, or “Bifurcations”, is a piece for seven pianists (fourteen hands) on a single piano. The piece was premiered in June, 2023 as part of the opera “...Everything Else...” and was later revised thoroughly for its performance as an individual concert piece.
The piece explores the concept of the "musical gesture" as an event that is composed, first, of a kinetic part (the bodily motion of playing an instrument) and, then, of a sonic part (the audible result of the physical effort). The division of gesture into two parts also allows for composing “silent” gestures (stroking the air, standing up, moving around the piano) while still using the logic of music composition and the written language of musical scores.
The name "Bifurcations" refers to the dramaturgical plan of the piece, which is that of the trajectory of a point that bifurcates, reunites, and separates again into several parts, as it travels over the entire surface of the piano. The pianists, by chasing the point with their hands, translate this trajectory into sound.
The score is available for free, on demand. Please contact for more info.
When: The revised version was premiered on November 1st, 2023 in Auditorio Fundadores of Eafit University, as part of the concert "OTRORRUIDO”.
