Fist-fight with a MIDI keyboard

a 35’ sound performance

In "Fist-fight with a MIDI keyboard", a device as familiar as the digital piano becomes, a living, capricious, and temperamental being that needs the hands, feet, and voice of the character- performer to be tamed. Fortunately, the character does not care about domestication and prefers instead to sound free alongside the piano; two feral creatures growling, barking, biting, listening.

The piece is, in other words, an exploration on the possible dynamics that appear when proposing an anarchic relationship between instrument and player: Who is in control?, who knows how to play who?, who makes the sounds?; are they fighting?, are they collaborating? are they flirting?

The work engages earnestly with visual, cultural and sonic cues from sources as disparate as extreme metal (corpse paint, blast beats, screaming, seriousness), classical music (bowing, piano recitals, solemnity, pompousness), theater clown (humor, audience interaction, the nose) and experimental music. They all become raw material to be queered and played with.

The material for this piece was first developed in Medellín, Colombia alongside Jakko Libreros for our performance MIDI MIDI. Some of this material was used and expanded to make the performance SCREAMING TUTORIAL, which was presented in HKB, Bern on the 9th of December, 2025.

When: presented in Dampfzentrale, Bern during the event “Szenefenster” on the 29th of April, 2026, and at Spoutnik, Geneva during ACT Festival on the 2nd of May, 2026.
