Listening mirror no. 1 (circle)
a 20’ sound performance
Listening mirrors are pieces that explore the emotional possibilities when listening to ourselves listening.
In this listening mirror, the audience enters a room and listens to a series of abstract sounds of varying volume, including some that are extremely quiet. In the meantime, they witness two parallel processes that slowly reveal the nature of the sounds: One is the shift from obfuscation to transparency (through the removal of filters and effects); the other is the shift from past sound to present sound (through increasingly shorter delay times).
At some point in this process, they are confronted with the fact that they are listening to themselves speaking outside of the room, right before the performance. The two processes reach their endpoint and "implode" into a saturated feedback that is activated by the performer through engagement with the microphone in the center of the room. From a hidden speaker, we "eavesdrop" on a scripted gossip that brings together the meta-awareness of the performance.
